Objective: 
  1. To understand concept of testing as related to yarn and fabric.
  2. To enable students to understand various testing methods.

Unit I: 
  • Introduction: Aim and scope of testing
  • Objectives of textile testing.
  • Selection of samples for testing – Random sampling procedures for determination of properties of fibers, yarn and fabrics.
  • Standards atmospheric test condition, various methods to measure relative humidity, moisture content and moisture regain of textiles.
  • Factors affecting regain of textile materials and their effects on fiber properties.

Unit II: 
  • Fibre testing – length fineness and evenness, crimp, strength, elongation its implication on quality
  • Yarn testing – Yarn numbering and conversion system, fineness, twist, crimp, elongation, elastic recovery and strength.
  • Evenness testing of yarns, nature and causes of irregularities, principles and methods of evenness testing, evaluations and interpretation of evenness results
  • Yarn hairiness, principle of measurement, measuring instruments. Test for filament and textured yarn.

  • Fabric Testing – Strength, elongation, shrinkage, thickness, cover, air permeability, crease recovery, stiffness, weight, repellency drape.
  • Fabric inspection procedure its defects and their analysis.
  • Fabric’s mechanical properties such as smoothness, stiffness, softness and shear, drape behavior.

  • Test related to fabric appearance such as pilling, crease and wrinkle recovery, fabric handle and factors influencing, fabric comfort.
  • Serviceability testing parameters such as abrasion resistance, fabric strength, tear strength, bursting strength and snagging test, assessment of barre and other form of fabric defects.

  • Colour Fastness Tests: Introduction and importance of colour fastness tests. Methods of evaluation of colour fastness by grey scales.
  • Methods of determination of colour fastness to washing, bleaching, perspiration, rubbing, sea water, hot pressing, light
