Objective: 

This course will enable the students to develop a thorough knowledge of the basics of garment construction. Focus on the foundational elements of making clothing. Instruct on the necessary sewing skills for various aspects of garment assembly.

CO.44 Describe various sewing equipment, its functioning & common problems faced while usage.

CO.45 Analyze the common fabrics used in clothing construction.

CO.46 Examine various pre-preparatory processes involved in fabric preparation for garment construction & get familiar with fabric grain & its importance.

CO.47 Categories various types of seams and finishes

CO.48 Develop skill in understanding various garment construction processes like seams, fullness, neckline finishes [2], placket openings [3], hems [4], fasteners etc.

CO.49 Contribute effectively course-specific interaction

 

Approach in teaching: Interactive Lectures, Discussion, Power Point Presentations, Informative videos

 

Learning activities for the students: Self-learning assignments, Effective questions, presentations, Field trips.

Assessment tasks will include Class Test on the topics, Semester end examinations, /Quiz, Student presentations, and assignments

Introduction to Sewing Machines
  • Common Sewing terms
  •  Tools and Equipment used for measuring, drafting, pinning, cutting and sewing
  • Sewing machine and attachments:
    • Types, parts and functions of sewing machine
    • Defects and Remedies

Unit II: 
Introduction to following varieties of fabrics (physical appearance, uses and care)
  • Cotton Fabrics – gingham, madras cotton, chambray, chintz, poplin, lawn, muslin, crinkle cotton, voile, lace, cambric, cheese cloth, calico, damask, denim.
  • Woolen Fabrics – worsted, flannel, cashmere, tartan, gabardine, modern tweed, Jersey, mohair.
  • Linen & Silk fabrics – suiting linen, satin, taffeta, organza, crepe De china, devore velvet, chiffon, dupion, georgette, shantung.
  • Synthetic & Special Fabrics – acrylic, viscose, polyester crepe, Microfiber, fleece, nylon, sequin fabric, spandex, fur fabric, leather

Preparation of fabric
  • Fabric grain
  • Preparation of fabric before Cutting: straightening, shrinking, pressing
  •  Different types of layout: crosswise, longitudinal, open and combination for various fabric types (directional, checks, stripes, bold prints and borders)
  • Marking, Pinning, Cutting

Seams and finishing of raw edges
  • Seams and Seam Finishes
  • Additional seam techniques: clipping, notching, trimming, easing under stitching, stay stitching, trimming a corner, piping, facings
  • Finishing of hemlines
  • Study of interrelationship of needle, thread and stitch length.

Study of garment components: Application & sewing sequence and techniques of making of the following:
  • Necklines and Collars
  • Sleeves and sleeve finishes, cuffs
