Objective: 

This course will enable the students to understand knowledge of the essential and desirable properties and structure of textile fibers. Enable the students aware of various yarn formation processes/fabric construction techniques, dyeing/printing and finishing process.

CO1: Comprehend the classification of various natural and manmade fibers and their physical properties.

CO2:Recognize the various techniques of yarn spinning, yarns and yarn properties and characteristics.

CO3: Demonstrate an understanding of various types of fabric forming methods.

CO4: Explain the dyeing and printing techniques and printing styles.

CO5: Interpret the introduction to various finishes and special surface enhancement.

CO6: Contribute effectively in course- specific interaction.

  • Introduction & Classification of Textile fibers    
  • General properties of Fibers –Primary & Secondary
  • Natural Fibers: Cotton, Wool, Silk, Jute, Linen
  • Man-made Fibers: Rayon, Nylon, Polyester, Acrylic

Yarn Formation Process                                                                                    

  • Basic principles of yarn making- Mechanical spinning (cotton spinning), Chemical spinning-  Wet, Dry and Melt.
  • Yarn Twist-S & Z type
  • Types of yarns, properties and uses – Simple, Novelty and Textured yarns.
  • Yarn count, Yarn Numbering system (Direct and Indirect)
  • Blends: Types of blends and purpose of blending

Fabric Construction Methods                                                                 

  • Definition, Introduction of loom and its parts
  • Types of loom, stages of weaving process
  • Classification and construction of basic weaves

  • Classification and introduction of dyes: Natural dyes and Synthetic dyes
  • Styles of printing – direct, discharge, resist                               
  • Methods of printing
  • Block printing

  • Stencil, screen (flat and rotary) printing
  • Transfer printing
  • Digital printing
  • Fabric defects in Dyeing and printing

Introduction to Finishes                                                                                

  • Classification of finishes                                               
  • Preparatory finishes- Desizing, Scouring, Bleaching, Singeing
  • Finishes affecting appearance and texture: Calendering, Napping, Stiffening, Parchmentization, Raising, Mercerization, Tentering
  • Finishes for enhancing special characteristics: Flame proofing, Soil & Stain Release, Water proof and water repellent, Crease Resistance, Sanforising
