Objective: 
  1. To understand the preparatory processes of natural fibers.
  2. To understand the preparatory processes of man-made fibers.

UNIT I

      Preparation of Cotton Fabric:

                                                                             

  • Singeing: Objective, types of singeing, details of various singeing methods, drawbacks and advantages.
  • Desizing: Objective, types, method, details and mechanism of removal of starch in various methods. Efficiency of desizing.

UNIT II
  • Scouring: Objectives, mechanism of removal of impurities.
  • Bleaching: Objectives of bleaching.
  • Types of bleaches:  Hypochlorite, peroxide, chlorite and their effectiveness on various textiles.

  • Mercerization: Objectives, mechanism related to various physical and chemical changes in cotton during mercerization.
  • Mercerization by Alkali treatment processes.

  • Preparation of Silk and Wool: Impurities present, degumming/scouring, bleaching, optical whitening of wool and silk.

  • Introduction to pretreatments of Synthetic fibers
  • Heat setting: Objectives and mechanism of setting. Different methods of heat setting and their effectiveness on various man made textiles and blends.

Blended fabrics: Importance, types and their qualitative and quantitative analysis
