Objective: 
  1. To understand the basics of garment making.
  2. To focus on the fundamental principles of garment construction.
  3. To impart the students with the basic sewing techniques of various components of the garment.

Unit I

Introduction to Sewing Machines 

  •  Common Sewing terms
  •  Equipment and tools used for measuring, drafting, pinning, cutting and sewing
  •  Sewing machine: types, parts and functions of sewing machine, defects and        remedies

Unit II: 
Unit II

Introduction to following varieties of fabrics:                 

  • Cotton Fabrics – Jersey, gingham, madras cotton, chambray, chintz, seersucker, poplin, lawn, muslin, crinkle cotton, sports net, voile, lace, cambric, cheese cloth, eyelet, calico, damask, denim.

 

  • Woollen Fabrics – worsted, flannel, cashmere, tartan, crepe, coating,  gabardine, modern tweed, double coating, single jersey, double jersey, mohair, alpaca.

 

  • Linen & Silk fabrics – suiting linen, handkerchief linen, moil, silk and wool mix, Silk & cotton mix, silk & linen mix, silk satin, taffeta, organza, washed silk, crepe De china, devore velvet, chiffon, dupion, georgette, shantung.

 

  • Synthetic & Special Fabrics – acrylic, crepe, viscose, grosgrain, polyester crepe, Microfiber, boucle, poly linen, polar fleece, crepe backed satin, flock, pure nylon, Jacquard fabric, acetate, vinyl, crinkle, fabric, rubber, sequin fabric, spandex, PVC, fur fabric, liquid gold, leather.
  • Study of interrelationship of needle, thread and stitch length.

Unit III

Preparation of fabric   

  •  Preparation of fabric before Cutting: straightening, shrinking, pressing and checking for flaws.
  •  Different types of layout: crosswise, longitudinal, open and combination for various fabric types (directional, checks, stripes, bold prints and borders)

UNIT IV

Introduction to basic sewing technique                                           

  • Basic hand stitches –basting (even, uneven, diagonal), running, back stitch hemming (visible and invisible), slip stitch, whip stitch
  • Seams and seam finishing- plain, pinked, overcasting, Hong Kong seam, bound seam, French seam, Top seam, corded seam, lapped seam, slot seam
  • Disposal of fullness- gathers, pleats, tucks

Sewing sequence and techniques of making of the following:                                        

  • Necklines and Collars
  • Sleeves and sleeve finishes
  • Making and applying pockets
    •  Fasteners and its applications
    • Selecting and designing clothing’s according to figure types
