This course will enable the students to-
1. To understand the hand, feel, structure of woven, knits and other fabrics with their
properties and usage in textiles
2. To collect different fabric swatches and analyse them for their properties
3. To assess the quality and suitability of fabrics for various purposes

The students will be able to – CO 13. To explore and learn various tools, techniques and processes in textile industry CO 14. Survey and collect fabric swatches for woven and knitted sample CO 15. Analyze the hand, feel, structure, properties and usage of different fabrics CO 16. Identification and presentation of weaves on graph paper CO 17. Determining the properties of fibre and yarn through textile testing CO 18. Testing the properties and performance of various fabrics CO 19. Development of samples on loom |
Approach in teaching: Interactive lecture,Demonstration, Power point presentations, Market survey, Industry visit, Relevant videos
Learning activities for the students: Self-learning assignments, analysing fabric samples, working on loom, product development |

Course Content:
- Weaving 30 hrs
Market survey and collection of swatches from various sources and prepare a scrapbook of fabric samples for:
- Types of fabrics: Woven and Knitted
- Identification of Basic Weaves
- Plain, Twill, Satin and Sateen weave
- Construction of Basic weaves on loom- Plain, Twill, Satin
(Weave Representation: Weaving plan, weave repeat, lifting plan)
Exploration and identification of the above fibre/fabrics through:
- Physical and burning testing 10 hrs
- Cotton, Silk, Wool
- Synthetic, Blend
- Yarn Testing 05 hrs
- Yarn twist- S and Z
- Types of yarn (single, ply, cord)
- Yarn count
- Fabric Testing 10 hrs
- Thread Count
- Fabric weight
- GSM
- Fabric Thickness
- Fabric Stiffness test
- Crease recovery
- Dimensional stability
- Product Development: 10 hrs
- Create a napkin/stole on loom
- Create a sample of pile rug on frame loom
Industry Visit 10 hrs
