Objective of the activity (workshop/seminar/activity/Visit):  To raise awareness among students about Kanchipuram sarees, and handloom techniques.

Description:

The Department of Fashion & Textiles, IIS (deemed to be University), Jaipur organized a visit to the Weaver Service Centre (Ministry of Textiles, Government of India).

The visit commenced with an insightful presentation by the Tapan Sharma, Director of WSC, Jaipur, who explained different handloom techniques to the students such as dobby, jacquard, and jala, along with the product development initiatives undertaken by WSC Jaipur over the past two years.

Next, Shri B. Krishnamoorthy, a National Awardee and Sant Kabir Awardee, shared his expertise and shed light on the significance of handloom weaving. He explained the layout of the motifs according to the types of design. He also emphasized the importance of specific techniques used for the border design and sari body merger in Kanchipuram sarees. It was inspiring to witness his passion for preserving traditional weaving methods.

Shri B. Krishnamoorthy shared his designs with the students and encouraged them to create new motifs and designs.  Mr. Krishnamoorthy knowledge and skill about handloom weaving left a lasting impression on all the participants.

Outcome of the activity: The visit to the Weaver Service Centre proved to be highly beneficial for the students. They gained a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the weaving of Kanchipuram sarees, innovation in weaving techniques, and wide range of handloom products developed through weaving. Moreover, the visit provided insights into the various opportunities available for designers in the handloom industry. The students left with lasting impression about rich textile heritage of India and its contribute towards encouragement for growth of handloom textiles.
