Report on Extension Activity

An Extension Activity of two days was organised by the Department of  Fashion and Textiles at Mohanpur, Village Vatika, Sanganer on  22 & 23 March 2018. The coordinators were Ms. Poorvi Agarwal, Assistant Professor and Ms. Yogita Sharma. They were accompanied by a group of eight students of B.Sc. Fashion Design Semester II & B.Sc. Fashion Technology Semester VI.

Eight students, along with the two faculty members, Ms. Poorvi Agarwal and  Ms. Yogita Sharma left the campus at 10 am. Village Vatika is located in Sanganer, Jaipur and this organization is working with the support of BOSCH. This organization has many centers in Bassi, Dausa ets. The BOSCH company have a set up of their plant in this village and this company works for the rural development along with few nearby women.

The main objective behind this activity was to make the rural women aware about the various surface ornamentation techniques used to decorate the finished fabric to increasing their market value. The students of Fashion and Textiles department worked with those women to make their products  look better.

                                                     

 

The students were divided into five groups and gave the demo for tassels, pom-pom and embroidery work on fabric, surface ornamentation for value addition on Kurties. The women reported that they don’t knew basic hand stitching and embroidery. The session began with the demonstration of making Chain stitch, Satin Stitch, Stem Stitch etc. The women showed immense interest and discussed about their lifestyle and culture as well. 

On day two, students collected all the fabrics which was available in the form of scrap. On the second day of the visit, students individually took the women along with them and taught them to cut and stitch bags out of waste fabrics. The students used patchwork and appliqué techniques to make these articles. The motive of the activity was to enhance skill of underprivileged women. They were taught to make various reversible table mat, different type of bags like Weave pattern bag, Bottle bag, etc. out of scrape material.  

The women showed keen interest and learnt the skills. They made beautiful articles with the help of students from Dept. of Fashion and Textiles.
