Report Extension Activity

Venue:    Bhadarwas Basti ,Mansarovar, Jaipur

The Department of Fashion and Textile Technology organized an extension activity on 1st and 2nd March 2017, to Bhadarwas Basti, Mansarovar, Jaipur. The coordinators were Ms. Poorvi Agarwal, Assistant Professor and Ms. Shalu Sharma. They were accompanied by a group of nine students from B.Sc. Fashion Design II Semester & B.Sc. Fashion Technology IV  Semester .

Bhadrawas is a slum built by the Banjara tribe who had migrated from Jodhpur many years ago.

The students  collected all the ladies and children of the slum under a shed.   The motive of the activity was to up skill the tribe to make bags, pouches, comb pouches, potli bags, etc. out of rags. First of all the students demonstrated making of sling bags with cardboard and pieces of fabric. The women showed keen interest and shared their skills. The women reported they knew basic hand stitching and embroidery and they would also make bags for their personal use.

The other products was an envelope pouch made out of paper and rags. The women asked for the material and promised that they will also try and make those bags. Students had distributed biscuits and chocolates to the children .

On the second day the numbers of women for participation had increased and were more enthusiastic .They made beautiful pouches from the material the students had left the other day. They had also used patches and used basic hand stitches in their work. The session began with the demonstration of making potli bags and comb pouch. The students used paper, cardboard, patchwork and appliqués to make these articles. The women showed their interest and revealed about their lifestyle and culture. They made beautiful articles with the help of students from Dept. of Fashion and Textile Technology. The session ended with light refreshments for ladies .
