Objective of the activity (workshop/seminar/activity/Visit): To make the students aware about the handloom and sensitize towards developing and promoting them towards the revival of the vanishing craft.
Description:
Department of Fashion & Textiles, IIS (deemed to be University), Jaipur organized a visit to Weaver Service Centre (Ministry of Textiles), Govt. of India on occasion of celebration the “Cultural Week”, the rich Rajasthani culture tradition and artifacts on Gandhi Jayanti.
The programme started with a presentation by Shri Pradeep Kumar, Technical Superintendent, WSC, Jaipur about the field activities and product development undertaken by WSC Jaipur in last 1.5 years. There after Dr. Achal Pandya, HOD, Department of Conservation, IGNCA, New Delhi enlightened the students with the progress and contribution of IGNCA in conservation, preservation, and promotion of textile crafts and history. Dr. Achal gave a presentation on the conservation of textiles. He expressed the importance of the preservation of textiles, which is combination of science, art, and culture. He explained various natural and man-made factors that can damage organic material (textiles) and, suggested ways to prevent the deterioration.
After the presentation, students visited the Research Center of Weaver Service Centre. In the Research Centre displayed varieties of handloom products, various sarees of different states and textiles.
Outcome of the activity: Students were able to understand the significance of handloom, new techniques, diverse range of handloom products and opportunities in industry for designers. They also understood the valuable textile heritage, handling of artefacts in museum and basic curative conservation methods.
