Objective of the activity (workshop/seminar/activity/Visit) – Creating an attractive design portfolio

Description:

The Department of Fashion & Textiles organized a one-day workshop on "Design Portfolio" on October 20, 2023, at Vinayak Hall, which proved to be an enlightening and engaging event for the students. The workshop featured two prominent resource persons, Ms. Surbhi Jain, Designer, Farq by Surbhi, Jaipur & Ms. Aastha Khandelwal, Senior designer, Taj Imports Inc, Jaipur, who shared their expertise and insights on the art of creating attractive and appalling design portfolios. 

The workshop began with an introduction to the resource persons, providing context to their qualifications and accomplishments. Following the introductions, Ms. Aastha Khandelwal took a lead by explaining importance of portfolio. She enlightened that fashion designers showcase their work to potential clients and employers. A portfolio gives others insight into skills, talent, creativity, ideas and design style. She also explained that creating a professional portfolio that demonstrates versatility and ability to create design collections that reflect different concepts that can help one to secure a job in the fashion industry. 

She underlined the increasing importance of digital portfolios in the contemporary fashion industry and emphasized their significance. By showcasing the step by step explanation to create digital portfolio, Ms. Aastha provided concrete examples of how to effectively present one's work in a digital format, which is widely recognized and sought after in today's digital-centric world. Ms. Aastha showcased various versions of her portfolios, offering insights into her expectations when hiring interns and fresher. Her guidance on portfolio presentation and the key elements the industry looks for when evaluating potential candidates was particularly valuable for students as it provided them with an insider's perspective on industry expectations. These practical guidelines will provide students to create their portfolios according to industry standards and trends.

Following Ms. Aastha's discussion on digital portfolios, Ms. Surbhi Jain took the floor to talk about the contents of a portfolio. She shared examples of portfolios, detailing the key elements that make a portfolio stand out and effectively communicates as a designer's abilities and style. Ms. Surbhi emphasized the benefits of uploading portfolios on various platforms like Behance, which enable designers to showcase their work to a broader audience, including potential employers and clients. She emphasized that a portfolio for fashion design is a compilation of student work which showcases their ideas, creativity, skills and expertise. The session was interactive, encouraging students to actively participate by raising their questions and concerns, with Ms. Aastha Khandelwal and Ms. Surbhi Jain offering comprehensive answers and detailed solutions.

Outcome of the activity:  

In conclusion, the "Design Portfolio" workshop provided students with a holistic understanding of creating and presenting portfolios in the fashion and textiles industry. The valuable insights and practical guidance shared by Ms. Aastha Khandelwal and Ms. Surbhi Jain shed light on the importance of digital portfolios and the elements that make them effective. The session provided students with a clearer understanding of what it takes to succeed in the field, whether as an employee or as an entrepreneur. This workshop motivated students to excel in their future careers with the application of knowledge gained though the workshop.
