Description:
A visit to the Virasat Se Vikas exhibition at Jawahar Kala Kendra (JKK) was organized by the Department of Fashion & Textiles of IIS (Deemed to be University) on 14th August 2024 for students of B.Sc. Fashion Design (Sem III) and B.Sc. Fashion Design (Sem V)). A total of 20 students visited the exhibition.

The exhibition, curated as part of the Timeless Textile Traditions series, featured an array of heritage textiles, with the standout attraction being a Kota Doria saree showcasing 356 motifs, with intricate details such as a Mughal court scene on one part and Pabuji ji Phad on the other. Students were able to observe the fine craftsmanship of the motifs and appreciate the historical significance of these designs.

Other highlights of the exhibition included the display of a 250-year-old Jamawar, richly embroidered zardozi pieces, and velvet textiles from the royal collections. Ms. Madhulika of the House of Pucheear contributed antique items like a customized purse and kamchi (waistband), further demonstrating the opulence and craftsmanship of India’s textile heritage.

Students also explored collections from Vijendra Bansal, featuring rare lithographs depicting lord Kartikeya and other deities, along with traditional block printing techniques. The diversity of art forms in the exhibition underscored India’s cultural and textile diversity, showing how traditional textiles have influenced current design trends.

Ms. Sadhana Garg organizer of the exhibition, provided an in-depth explanations of all the heritage collections. She also emphasized the cultural and sustainable significance of preserving these crafts in the modern design industry.

Outcome of the Activity:

The visit to the Virasat Se Vikas exhibition allowed students to connect theoretical concepts from their coursework with real-world textile traditions. They gained insights into sustainable and traditional crafting techniques, expanding their knowledge of heritage textiles and how these techniques can inspire contemporary design.
