Objective: 
  1. To acquaint the students about the polymers of the textile fibres.
  2. To understand the chemical composition of fibre, production and fundamental properties of natural and synthetic fibres.
  3. To familiarize with the chemical processing from sizing to finishing of textiles and their principles.

Definition of Polymers, its types, degree and methods of polymerisation,   

Polymerisation process, inter –polymer forces of attraction,

Fibre forming polymers and general considerations with regard to fibre properties

Unit II: 

Orientation and crystallinity of fiber molecules; their influence on the fibre properties, Molecular structure and morphology of cellulose and protein fibers

Unit III: 

Melt spinning: Melting device, Grid and extruder, Static mixer, Pre-filtration, Manifold, Spin pack, Spinneret, Quenching chamber, Spin finish application, Take-up winding. Staple fibre line production details, high speed spinning - Polyester, Polyamide and Polypropylene.

Dry and wet spinning: Preparation of dope, extrusion and fibre formation. Comparison of Dry and wet spinning processes. Dry-jet-wet spinning, Gel spinning. Viscose rayon and variants.

Blended yarns: composition of fibres in cross section of blended yarns, blend Irregularity

High Performance Fibres: Glass, Carbon, Aramids
