Activity: Inter-organization competition in collaboration with SIDT (Sasmira Institute of Design and Textile) on the occasion of Khadi Mahotsav
Venue: Online
Participants: 46
Objective: The objective of the Khadi Mahotsav initiative was to promote awareness and appreciation of Khadi as a sustainable, indigenous textile that embodies India’s cultural heritage. It aimed to encourage students to creatively reinterpret Khadi through modern design perspectives while supporting the ethos of Vocal for Local and Atmanirbhar Bharat
The Department of Fashion and Textiles organized an inter-institutional initiative as part of the Khadi Mahotsav to celebrate India’s heritage fabric – Khadi. The event was designed to inspire students to value Khadi as a sustainable textile that beautifully harmonizes traditional craftsmanship with modern design sensibilities.
In collaboration with SASMIRA’s Institute of Design and Textiles (SIDT), a series of online competitions were held on October 2, 2025, under the Khadi Mahotsav banner. The contests featured two engaging categories — Vocal for Local Poster Design and Style with Khadi — encouraging participants to explore Khadi’s relevance from artistic and fashion perspectives. A total of 20 students from SIDT and 26 from IIS (Deemed to be University) participated, fostering meaningful creative exchange and collaboration between the two institutions.
In the Vocal for Local Poster Design category, participants designed digital posters promoting the use and importance of Khadi. Their concepts reflected Khadi’s sustainability, eco-friendliness, and indigenous essence, emphasizing its role in empowering artisans, preserving India’s cultural heritage, and supporting self-reliance.
The Style with Khadi competition invited participants to style themselves or a model in Khadi-based outfits, highlighting the fabric’s adaptability and elegance in contemporary fashion. Students displayed exceptional creativity, merging traditional aesthetics with modern silhouettes, proving Khadi’s relevance in the sustainable fashion movement.
The competitions concluded with the announcement of winners, who were awarded certificates recognizing their creativity, innovation, and contributions toward promoting Khadi.
