Objective: 
  • To be acquainted with the polymers of which the textile fibers are made.
  • To familiarize with the principles of chemical processing i.e. from preparatory process to finishing of textiles
  • To understand the chemistry, production and fundamental properties of natural and synthetic dyes

Polymer

  • Definition of Polymers, its types, degree and methods of polymerization, polymerization process, molecular weights of polymers and its determination.
  • Orientation of fiber molecules; their influence on the fiber properties.
  • Molecular structure and Morphology of cellulose, protein fibers and synthetic fibers.

Fabric Construction

  • Brief Introduction to Woven and Knitted Garment.
  • Parts of a simple loom and their function
  • Different types of looms- Shuttle looms- pit & table; Shuttleless looms- Rapier, Gripper, Multiphase, Airjet, Waterjet; Jacquard and dobby.
  • Weaving- Developments in weaving. Automation in weaving machines.
  • Knitting- weft and warp knitting machines. Flat knitting Technology.
  • Developments in Non- Woven.
  • Other methods of fabric formation in detail- Felting, bonding, knotting, lace making and braiding.

Dyes and Auxillaries

  • History of dyestuffs, light, color, dyestuffs, Structure & Use wise classification of dyes.
  • Color – Beer’s law and lambert’s law, colour mixing system, colour order system, CIE color specification, Instruments for the measurement of color, Kubelka-Munk Theory, Relation between K-S & concentration of colourant, understanding Color difference, Hue, Chroma, etc. Understanding the use of Color Index Standards, dye shade cards and pantone colour coding.
  • Brief introduction to Preparatory Processes & machinery - Singeing, Desizing, Scouring, Bleaching and Mercerization.
  • Introduction to Dyeing & Printing auxillaries:  wetting agent, dispersing agents, solvents, hygroscopic agents, antifoaming agents, oxidizing and reducing agents, softeners (anionic, cationic and non-ionic), detergents, leveling agents, carriers, bleaching agents, thickeners, binders, eco-friendly chemicals.

Dyeing & Printing

  • Dyeing – Principles and Mechanism of dyeing, Classification, colour and chemical    constitution – direct, reactive, vat, azoic, sulphur, basic, acid, disperse and natural dyes.
  • Printing using dyes and pigments on - (Cotton, silk, wool, Rayon, Polyester, & blends); After treatments
  • Recent advancements in Dyes and Chemicals, Eco –friendly Processing of Textiles, Modern Processing of Textiles, Conservation of utilities in Textile Processing, Recent Advancements in Processing Machinery, Applications of Bio-Technology, Plasma Technology and Nanotechnology in Textiles

  •   Environmental issues of Textiles, Introduction on Banned dyes
