Objective of the activity (workshop/seminar/activity/Visit):  To make the students aware and impart knowledge about the processes and development in the handloom industry

Description:

Department of Fashion & Textiles has organized a Guest Lecture: “Awareness on Handloom” on 13th December 2021. Mr. Tapan Sharma, Deputy Director & Head, Weaver’s Service Centre, Jaipur was the speaker for the session, an expert in the field of weaving, dyeing and printing. He has developed a very unique state of art centre for training programme for budding designers.

Handloom weaving constitutes one of the richest and most vibrant aspects of the Indian cultural heritage. The sector has the advantage of being less capital intensive, minimal use of power, eco-friendly, and flexible with small production, openness to innovations, and adaptability to market requirements. It is a natural productive asset and a tradition at the cottage level, which has been sustained and grown by the transfer of skill from one generation to the other.

Tapan sir has shared his knowledge and presentation on innovations in handloom made products. As Weaver’s Service Centre, Jaipur has devised various techniques on loom which includes:

1. Weaving of three-dimensional woven hollow layer fabric, help in making dimensional fabric.

2. Warp manipulation-currently only two techniques extra warp and extra weft, this is new to create new design.

3. Angle Manipulation-Change the base structure of fabric which helps to make entirely new fabric with different base.

4. Reversal of Warp and weft: New technique that can be used to make multiple products.

 

5. Distorted sley technique: Change the base of fabric with multiple effect.

6. Weafed Fabric: New technique which helps to do value addition to the current fabrics in big way.

7. Onloom Products: create end products on loom itself

Besides all this, he also shared about innovative plastic recycled products, jute bags, design curtains, accessories, shelves and handicraft products prepared on loom.

Outcome of the activity: The students were able to understand the significance of handloom, new techniques for enhancing practical learning, diverse range of handloom products and opportunities in this industry for designers.
