Description
The Fashion and Textiles Department organized educational trip to three popular Fabric Stores in Jaipur on September 17, 2025. The goal was to give students a hands-on experience at different fabrics, to feel the textures, and also the cost of fabric. It was a great way for them to learn about the latest trends in the market. During the visit, students got to explore everything from super fancy silks to everyday cottons. This real-world experience helped them to connect what they learned in class to actual drape of the different fabrics.
Highlights of Fabric Exploration
At Suryansh Store:
At suryansh store students came across a huge range of high-end fabrics. They saw different types of satins (like Fabia and Imported), crepes (including Banana and Viscose with mirror work), chiffons, and silks (pure silk, brocade, organza, and raw silk). They also checked out cool specialty fabrics like crushed silk and Swiss cotton. Students were aquainted with different price range of the fabric i.e. ₹225/mt, Swiss cotton ₹995/ mt for Velvet and many more. Students were especially fascinated by the feel of the silk handloom with chanderi print and the drape of the raw silk.
At Mangalam Store:
This store had a great mix of traditional and modern fabrics. The collection included viscose-based fabrics, georgettes with sequin work, and a variety of nets. They also saw cottons with pintucks and linen silk. Students noticed a big difference in prices, with fabrics ranging from for viscose crepe to sandwash silk. They were impressed by the quality of imported crepe and pure dupion silk, which helped them see how a great finish can increase the price.
At Saroj Store:
Saroj was all about affordable fabrics, perfect for everyday use or creative projects. They had lots of cottons like pure cambric, glace, and slub. For a slightly higher price, they found modal silk and cotton chanderi. Students also saw shimmer fabrics and glass organza that are perfect for festive wear and were budget friendly.
Student Reflections
The students found the trip super helpful and interesting. They loved comparing the fancy silks at Suryansh fabrics with the trendy fabrics at Mangalam and the budget-friendly cottons at Saroj. The students were able to physically touch and see the fabrics, how they drape, shine, and feel made much more sense than just reading about them. Seeing the different prices and qualities helped them understand how designers choose fabrics for both style and cost.
Outcome of the Activity
The visit to the fabric stores was a fantastic learning experience that connected classroom lessons with the real world. It gave the students a better understanding of the market, fabrics, and pricing—all key skills for future designers. By getting hands-on with textiles, they developed a deeper appreciation for the creativity and variety in the fashion industry.
