Topic of Activity: Stencil Printing on T-Shirts (Upcycling) Number of

Participants: 32 students of Girls Senior Secondary School, Sanganer, Jaipur

Activity Objective: To teach stencil printing skill to rural children and to promote upcycling of garments.

Description: On March 4, 2023, the Department of Fashion and Textiles organized a one-day extension activity at Govt. Girls Senior Secondary School, Sanganer, Jaipur. With the guidance of activity coordinators, 5 students from B.Sc. Fashion Design Semesters II and IV taught 32 rural students stencil printing skills.

The students were divided into three groups and each group demonstrated stencil printing using various effects, such as the dry brush effect, the sponge method, and the spray method. The main objective of the activity was to encourage rural school-going girls to up-cycle their old garments using stencil printing. Participants made different types of prints on t-shirts and some even created their own stencils using wax sheets and OHP sheets.

Students were made aware about the benefits of up-cycling the used clothes. It included reducing waste, saving resources, creativity, cost-effective, environmental benefits, and many more.

Outcome of the Activity: The activity of teaching rural students how to up-cycle old t-shirts had several positive outcomes. Some potential outcomes include:

Promoting creativity and innovation: Upcycling old t-shirts required students to think creatively and come up with innovative ways to reuse the fabric. This helped foster a sense of creativity and imagination among students.

Encouraging sustainability: By upcycling old t-shirts, students learned about the concept of sustainability and the importance of reducing waste. This encouraged them to adopt more sustainable practices in their daily lives.

Developing practical skills: Upcycling old t-shirts involved practical skills such as cutting, sewing, and designing. By learning these skills, students developed practical skills that could be useful in a variety of settings.

Boosting self-esteem: By completing an upcycling project, students felt a sense of accomplishment and pride in their work. This helped boost their self-esteem and confidence.

Fostering teamwork and social skills: Upcycling old t-shirts done in groups, helped students develop teamwork and social skills as they worked together to complete a project.
