Topic on which activity was organized: Skill imparted regarding embroidery & product development from waste fabrics.

Objective of the activity: To develop skill regarding awareness about the various types of embroideries to rural children and women’s and develop sustainable products from fabrics waste.

Description:

An Extension activity of one day was organized by the Department of Fashion and Textiles at Govt. Higher Secondary School, Sanganer, Jaipur on 7th May 2022. Under the guidance of the activity coordinator Dr. Sunetra Datt and Ms. Harshita Bhown. Saloni Gupta, Anjali Bohra, Saloni Jain, Namrata Agarwal, Krati Modi , Sanjana Garg and Vidhi Khandelwal students of B.Sc. Fashion Design Semester IV took an initiative and imparted skills to a group of approx. 15-16 women along with their children.

The students were divided into three groups and gave the demonstration for tassels, pom-pom of origami flowers and how they can prepare the mask and various types of handbags from waste fabric and value addition done through embroidery. They were also taught to select types of embroidery threads, needles and counting of strands according to motif.

The main objective behind this activity was to make the rural children and women aware about the various types of embroideries and how to develop product using waste products to increase their market value.

The women made various types of bags and sustainable products during this activity by waste fabrics. The women’s showed immense interest and discussed about they will like to take this art further on other products. The activity was concluded by making the women understand the importance of best out of waste for sustainability and also how they can contribute their share in empowering themseleves

 

Outcome of the activity- The skill of hand embroidery such as cross stitch, herringbone stitch, back stitch etc was imparted. They also learnt the art of attaching pearls, beads, quills, and sequins. Product development of such sustainable products provide environmental and social benefits along with a new market for expanding job opportunities and greater economic potential.

Children and women from rural areas learned various embroidery stitches as well as how to create products out of waste fabric and reuse them more effectively as a result of this extension activity. Such skills will not only increase their market values, but will also improve their quality of life. Participants expressed their interest in and learnt about upcycling products in embellishing them with unique styles of embroidery stitches.
