Objective of the activity:  The objective of this activity is to inspire students to creatively use Khadi fabric, blending tradition with modern design while promoting sustainability.

Description: The Khadi Mahotsav 2024, organized by the Department of Fashion & Textiles at IIS (Deemed to be University), Jaipur, in collaboration with SIDT,(SASMIRA’s Institute of Design and Textiles), Mumbai, was a celebration of the adaptability and heritage of Khadi fabric. This event allowed students to explore Khadi's role in contemporary design through three unique competitions, a total of 44 students both from IIS (deemed to be University) and SIDT,(SASMIRA’s Institute of Design and Textiles) Mumbai who presented their creative visions for styling, home décor, and garment construction using Khadi fabric.

Competitions and Results

  1. Khadi Trendsetter: Style It Your Way
    • Participants: 22
    • Description: This competition encouraged participants to curate unique, contemporary looks using Khadi, showcasing its versatility as a fashion-forward textile. Each styled look demonstrated the potential for Khadi to transcend traditional uses and appeal to modern aesthetics.
    • Judging Criteria:
      • Creativity in Styling: Originality and ingenuity in the use of Khadi to create a modern, fashionable look.
      • Fashion-forward Appeal: The extent to which the look represents current trends while maintaining the essence of Khadi.
      • Presentation: Overall visual impact and aesthetic appeal, including accessories and style statements.
    • Results:
    • 1st Prize: Anshika Gupta, B.Sc. Fashion Design Semester I, IIS (Deemed to be University), Jaipur
    • 2nd Prize: Anshika Panwar, B.Sc. Fashion Design Semester I, IIS (Deemed to be University), Jaipur

  1. Khadi Luxe Living: Home Décor Artistry
    • Participants: 11
    • Description: This category centered on the application of Khadi in home décor, encouraging students to design and construct two cushion or pillow covers. The competition emphasized blending elegance with the rustic charm of Khadi, enhancing the fabric’s role in home settings.
    • Judging Criteria:
      • Creativity and Practicality: Original design concepts that reflect both functionality and aesthetic appeal.
      • Craftsmanship: Quality of construction and finishing techniques, such as embroidery and patchwork.
      • Integration of Khadi: Effective use of Khadi in designs that elevate home décor.
    • Results:
    • 1st Prize: Tamanna Khatri, B.Sc. Fashion Design Semester III, IIS (Deemed to be University), Jaipur
    • 2nd Prize: Archi Salecha, B.Sc. Fashion Design Semester III, IIS (Deemed to be University), Jaipur
    • 3rd Prize: Shrasti Nirwan, B.Sc. Fashion Design Semester I, IIS (Deemed to be University), Jaipur
  1. Khadi Couture: Design & Construct
    • Participants: 11
    • Description: This competition highlighted garment construction skills, challenging participants to design and construct unique silhouettes using Khadi. Students showcased their creativity and craftsmanship, merging traditional techniques with contemporary design.
    • Judging Criteria:
      • Originality and Innovation: Distinctive designs that exemplify creative use of Khadi.
      • Technical Skill and Craftsmanship: Quality in garment construction, including draping, tailoring, and finishing.
      • Overall Presentation: Visual impact and alignment with the Khadi theme.
    • Results:
    • 1st Prize: Siddiqui Shifa Fatima Abrar, DFADT, Sasmira Institute of Design and Textiles
    • 2nd Prize: Kajal Kori, DFADT, Sasmira Institute of Design and Textiles
    • 3rd Prize: Tauhid Ansari, DFADT, Sasmira Institute of Design and Textiles

Event Highlights

The Khadi Mahotsav 2024 provided an invaluable platform for students to push creative boundaries with a traditional fabric, showcasing their design sensibilities while promoting sustainable fashion. The competitions demonstrated Khadi’s adaptability across various applications, from fashion styling to home décor and garment construction, sparking interest in sustainable practices among participants and audiences alike.

Learning Outcome

Students in Khadi Mahotsav 2024 developed essential skills in sustainable design, fabric manipulation, and aesthetic application. Working with Khadi allowed them to explore traditional textiles through a contemporary lens, fostering a deep appreciation for Khadi's cultural significance while enhancing their skills in styling, construction, and décor design. This experience empowered students to honor Khadi’s heritage while envisioning its potential in modern design and fashion industries.
