Objective of the webinar:

The two-day workshop on Research methodology was organized for the students of M.A/M.Sc./M.Com Sem I & Sem II, Research scholars and faculties of Fashion &Textiles. The objective behind organizing the workshop was to enlighten the students and faculty about the process of research writing and applications of research tools.

Summary/Description:

The Department of Fashion & Textiles has organized a 2 days online workshop on “Research Methodology” on 29-30 March 2022, from 1:15 to 4:15 pm. Dr. Suman Mundkur, Former Assistant Professor, SVT College of Home Science, Mumbai was the guest speaker of day 1- Tuesday, 29March 2022. Dr. Jyoti Aggarwal, Associate Professor, Institute of Home Economics, University of Delhi was the guest speaker of day 2- Wednesday, 30 March 2022. The webinar was attended by PG students, Research Scholars, and Faculty members of the Fashion & Textiles department.

On day 1, the resource person mainly focused on the Identification of Research Problem and Thrust Area, Conceptualization of Research Design and Thesis writing tools.

Shefocused on how to identify the thrust area in the field of fashion and textiles and to select the topic and its title accordingly. She also gave insights on writing introduction and background of study. She also discussed in detail about the purpose of review of literature as to gain understanding about the researches done by researchers and design the objectives.

Dr. Suman Mundkur explained how to search literature for the review. She explained various search strategies- phrase search, meta search engine, google scholar, academic search, intelligent search engine, mendeley, endnote, subject blogs, open access journals and various video search engines.She also explain the digital and online tools for survey, editing (Grammarly, Quilbot), data collection(Virtual interview, Researcher groups) , citation (BibMe, Citethisforme) publication assistance(Journal finder,Manuscript matcher, Publisher website , Pubsure) collaborative platform (ResearchGate, AcademiaEdu, AuthorAid) and plagiarism checking(Turnitin, Urkund, iThenticate, Plagrism checker)for dissertation & thesis writing.She further emphasized on few upcomingresearch areas such as the Geographical Indication to revive the art &craft, smart textiles in relation to electronic textile, redesigning and reconstruction to look towards circular economy and sustainability, zero wastepattern making and artificial intelligence in textiles and apparel industry.

On day 2, the speaker mainly focused on constructing a Research Instrument in Quantitative Research and Application of Statistical Tools in Research related in the field of Fashion & Textiles.

She discussed the qualities of quantitative data. She explained the measurement scales, such as nominal scale,ordinal scale,interval scale and ratio scale. She explained the numerical descriptive techniques data analysis – univariate, bivariate, multivariate and graphical representation of data such as histogram, bar charts, ogive, pie charts and line graphs. She described the different types of sampling techniques with examples.The resource person also explained the concept of hypothesis and she highlighted on Z-test, one and two sample t test, and Mann Whitney U test.

She gave an insight about the instruments used in quantitative research. She highlighted on statistics and gave insight on different statistical tools applications to be used in the research studies.

The participants actively participated and their queries were addressed in between the session and towards the end of session.

Outcome of the webinar:

The participants were enlighten by the workshop. The participants were extremely overwhelmed by the knowledge of research received by the both resource person as it will help them to carry out quality research and use various tools for carrying the research. They also extend their gratitude for the informative workshop.
