Objective of the Event: To build an ecosystem for women across India to realize their entrepreneurial aspirations, scale-up innovative initiatives and chalk-out sustainable, long-term strategies for their businesses.

Description:

The Department of Fashion Design organized a guest lecture on “Scope of women’s Entrepreneur in Fashion Industry” for students of B.Sc. Sem.-VI and M.A./M.Com./ M.Sc. Sem. – IV  by the  special guest   Dr. Sunanda Mitra Roy, Lecturer & Coordinator, Department of Fashion & Apparel Design, Rani Birla Girls’ College under University of Calcutta.

 She discussed the areas of women entrepreneurship in the field of Apparel & Textiles , its features, categories of women entrepreneurs, the challenges faced by entrepreneurs. She discussed different phases that an entrepreneur face in fashion business and how do they go through gestation phase and discussed the importance of preparing small quantity of products and wait for consumer acceptance then gradually move towards growth and expansion of business. A women entrepreneur needs to be determined, passionate, flexible, effective communicator, have managerial skills, and should have depth knowledge about her field of business.

She discussed various Fashion Designers as entrepreneurs of India and their contribution in fashion industry like Payal Singhal, Anamika Khanna, Anita Dongre’s efforts towards sustainability, Ritu Kumar known for contemporary prints using blocks, Kiran Uttam Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul. She also had lively interaction with students on different topics to keep them motivated. Session was concluded by answering queries and collecting feedback from participants.

 

Outcome of the event: The main objective behind this lecture was to instill the fact that women entrepreneurs in India are a precious economic resource and can be harnessed to its fullest potential.
