B.Sc. Fashion Design (Semester II) Students

Objective of the Activity:

The visit aimed to provide students with exposure to India’s rich artisanal heritage, sustainable business practices, and the evolving landscape of traditional crafts. Through direct engagement with artisans, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders, students gained valuable insights into handcrafted textiles, handloom products, jewelry, and sustainable design innovations.

Description:

The Department of Fashion & Textiles organized a visit to "Colours of Fusion," an exhibition dedicated to artisanal craftsmanship, innovation, and entrepreneurship, under the esteemed banner of the Bhishm Livelihood Training Council (BLTC). The event featured vibrant stalls showcasing diverse handmade products, including textiles, jewelry, and handloom crafts, while promoting sustainability.

Students had the opportunity to learn from artisans and entrepreneurs about traditional handicrafts and their modern adaptations. They observed firsthand the significance of GI-tagged products and the role of ZED: Zero Effect Zero Defect – A certification scheme by the Indian government to promote quality manufacturing with minimal environmental impact and BIS: Bureau of Indian Standards – The national body in India responsible for standardization, certification, and quality assurance of products and services. The exhibition highlighted environmentally friendly approaches to fashion and textiles, reinforcing the importance of ethical production and cultural preservation.

A key highlight of the event was where students explored various stalls representing different fabric and art forms, including the Weaver’s Service Center, which showcased exquisite handloom textiles and weaving demonstrations on looms. Other stalls featured a variety of traditional crafts such as block printing, Madhubani paintings, Pichwai art, Dabu Printing, intricate Bandhani fabrics, tie-dye materials handwoven carpets, and durries. These exhibits provided an in-depth look into India’s diverse textile heritage and the craftsmanship that goes into each piece.

Outcomes of activity:

  • Students engaged with artisans and industry professionals, gaining practical knowledge of traditional craft techniques.

  • Explored sustainability initiatives and industry certifications that support ethical craftsmanship and eco-friendly businesses.

  • The experience enhanced their appreciation for handcrafted textiles and provided inspiration for future design projects.

The visit to "Colours of Fusion" at JKK successfully bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications in fashion and textiles. It offered an enriching experience that deepened students' understanding of India’s textile heritage, sustainable business practices, and contemporary design possibilities.
