Objective: 
  1. To impart knowledge of fibres, sources of fibres and their properties.
  2. To provide knowledge of yarn science and yarn properties to students.

  • Introduction to textile fibres, classification of fibers based on source and origin
  • Manufacturing and properties (Primary and secondary) of various fibres, cotton, linen, jute, wool, silk, rayon, acetate and triacetate, polyamide (nylon 6 and nylon 66) acrylics, modacrylic, electrometric fibres

  • Different types of spinning- mechanical and chemical spinning
  • Classification of yarns- carded and combed yarns, woolen and worsted  yarns, spun and filament yarns, simple and novelty yarns, bulk and textured yarns
  • Yarn properties of fabric- yarn linear density, count, twist in yarns, twist direction, strength and uniformity

  • Physical properties of fabric- Fabric strength, abrasion resistance, crease recovery, stiffness, drapability, static electricity, thermal conductivity, air permeability, water repellency, thickness, shrinkage, pilling resistance

  • Parts of a simple loom and their function
  • Different types of looms:
  1. Shuttle looms- pit and table
  2. Shuttleless looms- Rapier, Gripper, Multiphase, Air jet, water jet
  3. Jacquard and dobby

  • Basics of Weaving and Knitting
  • Different methods of fabric formation- Basic, figured and embroidered effect weaves
  • Other methods of fabric formation in detail- Felting, bonding, knotting, lace making and braiding
