No. of Participants: 03 faculties from the Department were deputed to attend the aforesaid event. The faculty members were Dr. Radha Kashyap, Ms. Neha Panwar and Dr. Vipin Kumari

Objective of the activity: To create awareness on handloom weaving and innovative products developed through various handloom techniques, main emphasis was live demonstration and display of Paithani Sarees.

Description:

Weavers Service Centre has organized an Inaugural Ceremony of Live Demonstration and Display of “Paithani” Sarees on 21st December 2021. Mr. Tapan Sharma, Deputy Director & Head, Weaver’s Service Centre, Jaipur took an initiative for organizing this event. The resource person was National Awardee Weaver, Mr. Ramesh Singh Pardesi expert for producing Paithani Saree on handloom.

The event started with Inaugural ceremony and lamp lighting. Approximately 20-25 academicians from various Institutes attended the session both online and offline. Mr. Ramesh Singh Pardesi     discussed the details of Paithani Sarees displayed at Design Resource Centre in terms of colour, pattern, design, price range, weaving technique, labour and time required to develop a single saree on loom. He also shared the local terms used for weaving while demonstrating the design on loom.

Weaver’s Service Centre exhibited a complete design segment of products developed through warp manipulation, reversal of warp and weft, distorted sley technique, angle manipulation, three dimensional woven hollow fabric were displayed such as sarees, skirts, poncho, hand bags, durrie, mats, lamp sheds, home décor items, curtain etc.

The event ended with an interactive session and group discussion under the Chairmanship of Mr. Tapan Sharma with various institutes where the basic emphasis was to promote and spread awareness on handloom. Weavers Service Centre also offered Institutes to make the students involve for internship, making designs for the training programme, working on designing of diversified product developed, making different end products from the fabric made in WSC, documentation of training programme, digitization of design. They also proposed to organize Faculty Development Programme, in which various activities like refreshing the traditional technicalities related to traditional textiles, writing a paper on the techniques developed by WSC, compiled handloom curriculum etc may be planned.

Outcome of the activity: The live demonstration and display of Paithani Sarees was quite fruitful in understanding the techniques of weaving. The colour, design and pattern intervention for developing a handloom saree enhanced the practical learning. The diverse range of handloom products was functional and attractive. Besides all, there are ample opportunities for young budding designers to create innovative designs for the textile industry.
