Report on National Handloom Day Celebration

Introduction:

The Department of Fashion and Textiles commemorated National Handloom Day on 7th October 2024, celebrating India’s rich handloom heritage with vibrant enthusiasm and creativity. The event featured active participation from students in two major competitions: the Saree Styling Competition and the Reel Making Competition, both designed to honor the cultural significance of handloom textiles while encouraging creative expression among the students.

The esteemed panel of judges included Ms. Vedika, founder of ARTEROPA fashion house, and Ms. Shivani Rajoria, Owner and Creative Director of Rajoria’s The Design Studio. The event was further elevated by the presence of the Honorable Vice-Chancellor, Dr. T.N. Mathur, Respected Registrar, Dr. Raakhi Gupta, and Dean, Prof. Ila Joshi. Prof. Radha Kashyap, Director of the School of Design, and Dr. Sulekha Ojha, Head of the Department of Fashion & Textiles, along with all faculty members, graced the occasion, offering their support and encouragement to the students.

Objectives of the Event:

  • To raise awareness about the cultural heritage of handloom textiles.

  • To encourage creativity and innovation among students in styling and digital content creation.

  • To celebrate the importance of handloom in the fashion and textile industry.

Competitions:

1. Saree Styling Competition:

The Saree Styling Competition allowed students to express their creativity while honoring the cultural significance of handloom textiles.

Rules & Guidelines:

  • Eligibility: Open to all students of the Department of Fashion and Textiles.

  • Theme: Participants had to style their sarees in a way that highlighted the cultural heritage of handloom textiles.

  • Time Limit: Each participant was given 3 minutes to present their styled saree.

  • Presentation: Students explained their styling choices and the cultural significance of the handloom saree they used.

  • Judging Criteria: Creativity, adherence to the theme, presentation skills, and cultural significance of the handloom used.

  • Attire: Participants used handloom sarees for the competition.

The competition was further enhanced by the participation of students from different departments, who volunteered as models for the contestants, showcasing the diverse and creative saree styles.

Winners:

  • First Prize: Saloni Rathore, B.Sc. Fashion Design Sem III, who draped a Handloom Jamdhani saree with a modern touch by creatively forming sleeves through draping.

  • Second Prize: Ambika Verma, B.Sc. Fashion Design Sem V, who used Khadi fabric to style a skirt and tube top using a saree.

  • Third Prize: Bhavika Jain, B.Sc. Fashion Design Sem V, who crafted unique bows by draping handwoven sarees.

  • Special Consolation Prize: Aditi Pareek, BA (Hons) Sem I, for her innovative styling.

2. Reel Making Competition:

The Reel Making Competition challenged students to create short reels that creatively showcased handloom textiles and their cultural heritage.

Rules & Guidelines:

  • Eligibility: Open to all students of the Department of Fashion and Textiles.

  • Theme: Reels were to creatively depict handloom textiles and their cultural heritage.

  • Duration: Reels were required to be between 30 seconds and 1 minute long.

  • Format: Reels were to be submitted in MP4 format.

  • Content: The content needed to highlight the beauty and cultural significance of handloom textiles.

  • Judging Criteria: Creativity, adherence to the theme, visual appeal, and storytelling.

The reels produced by the students beautifully captured the essence of handloom textiles, blending tradition with modern storytelling techniques. The creativity and visual appeal of the reels showcased the versatility and timelessness of handloom textiles.

Event Highlights:

  • The event successfully brought together students and faculty to celebrate handloom textiles and their role in preserving cultural heritage.

  • The competitions fostered a spirit of creativity, innovation, and pride in India’s textile traditions.

  • Students were able to showcase their talents and deepen their understanding of the importance of handloom in the contemporary fashion and textiles industry.

  • First Prize: Kanishka Agarwal, B.Sc. Fashion Design, Sem V

  • Second Prize: Meena Gujar, B.Sc. Fashion Design, Sem V

  • Third Prize: Tamanna Khatri, B.Sc. Fashion Design, Sem III

Conclusion:

The National Handloom Day celebration organized by the Department of Fashion and Textiles was a resounding success. The enthusiastic participation in the Saree Styling and Reel Making Competitions demonstrated the students' creativity and deep appreciation for the cultural heritage of handloom textiles. The event not only honored the legacy of handloom but also inspired students to continue exploring the rich traditions of Indian textiles in their future work.

Learning Outcome: 

The National Handloom Day celebration provided students with a profound understanding of the cultural significance of handloom textiles and their role in the fashion and textile industry. Through active participation in the Saree Styling and Reel Making Competitions, students developed skills in creative expression, presentation, and digital storytelling. They gained insights into the versatility and timeless appeal of handloom, learning to balance traditional heritage with contemporary design elements. The event fostered a deeper appreciation for Indian textile traditions, encouraged innovation, and reinforced the importance of preserving and promoting handloom in modern fashion contexts.
