Report on Webinar
Name of the Department: Fashion & Textiles
Name of the Activity: Webinar
Date: 22/3/2023
Venue: A 501
Topic on which activity was organised: Phase Change Material and Shape Memory Material
Number of Participants: 12 Students
Objective of the Workshop/Seminar/Activity: To make the students aware and impart knowledge about the Phase Change Material and Shape Memory Material processes and understand the advance materials and their applications
Overall Report of the activity:
The Department of Fashion and Textiles organized a webinar for all the students of M.A./M. Com/M.Sc in Fashion Design and Research Scholars on Monday, 22 March 2023. The Department invited Dr.Vandana Gupta Professor, Chitkara Design School Chitkara University to deliver talk on Phase Change Material and Shape Memory Material
Dr.Vandhan Gupta introduce the concept of Phase change materials (PCMs) are substances that can absorb or release large amounts of energy in the form of latent heat during a phase transition. The most common application of PCMs is in thermal energy storage (TES) systems, which can be used to regulate the temperature of buildings, vehicles, and electronic devices. During the webinar, Dr.Vandana Gupta discussed several types of PCMs, including organic and inorganic compounds, eutectic mixtures, and salt hydrates. She also explained Nitlot company work with PCM fabric. The choice of PCM depends on the specific application, as each type has different melting and solidification temperatures, thermal conductivity, and cost. The webinar also covered shape memory materials (SMMs), which can change shape in response to a stimulus, such as heat or a magnetic field. SMMs have a wide range of applications, including biomedical implants, aerospace components, and smart textiles.
Overall, the webinar provided a comprehensive overview of the properties and applications of both PCMs and SMMs, highlighting their potential to improve energy efficiency and enable new technologies in a variety of industries.
Outcome of the webinar:
The students were able to understand the significance of the principles behind the behavior of phase change and shape memory materials, their properties, and their potential applications in various industries.
